Fishing

World-class fishing

The waters around Lord Howe Island are teaming with pelagic and other temperate water fish.

For fisherman Lord Howe Island is synonymous with kingfish (locally known as "Greenbacks"), as can be readily seen from its restaurant menus. According to locals, a typical caught fish weighs 8 to 10 kilos.

The island offers excellent game fishing for the amateur and expert alike. This is a world class sports and game fishing area. Whiting, Trevally, Bonefish, Australian Salmon, Spangled Emperor, Bluefish and the Double Headed Wrass (unique to Lord Howe) are caught around the island and Yellow Fin and Wahoo at Ball's Pyramid. Black, Blue and Stripped Marlin can be hooked in late summer and early autumn. Spear fishing, netting or trapping are not permitted.

There are many trails that will lead you to great beach and rock fishing spots around the island, though with rock ledge fishing safety should always be top of mind. Arajilla supplies a detailed fishing map with tips. Guided fishing trips and charter vessels are readily organised by Arajilla Retreat for their guests. If you're interested in a fishing trip, let us know in the comment section when filling out the Booking Enquiry form on this web site.
